The quickest way to get me not to do something

is to volunteer me for it. My son's teacher came to meet him here at the house last week (he's special ed). When we started talking she said to me "So what do you do?" I said "Well I have my own business here on line and I stay home with the kids." Her response was "OOOOhhhh gooood, so then you can be my caller and organizer and such for when we have class parties and things." Not a question, just a statement. First of all, please don't make it out that I don't want to be involved in my kid's lives. I make Halloween goodie bags for all the classes, Holiday cookies, Valentine's Day treat bags, etc. But I DO NOT want to be the person that tries to organize a class party and have people hem and haw and then when they don't do what they're supposed to do, have to run around like a madman doing it all myself last minute. And please, don't EVER volunteer me for something, especially in a way that makes me think that you are assuming that because I'm a stay at home mom, my time is less important than yours because you're a teacher, or hold down some other 'worthy' job. Am I wrong to feel this way? It just rubbed me the wrong way.

I don't think you are wrong in feeling that way. Ofcourse I am a stay at home mom too so I know how you feel. It gettngs annoying having people assume that because you are a stay at home mom you have all the time in the world on your hands. I have 3 kids, i have appointments and laundry and cooking and dusting and putting toys away that I just picked up 10 minutes ago! Even with the government saying that if stay at home moms were paid for all they do they would make a six figure salary, people still don't value what we do. I don't think it was right of the teacher to just assume you would help her.

Thanks for your response, I wasn't sure if it just rubbed me the wrong way because I was cranky that day or what. I honestly feel that people don't value our time because in their eyes we just sit around and watch soaps all day and eat bon bons while the kids are at school. LOL Oh, if only that was the truth! :)
