Women as victims of Domestic Violence

In recent years women have increasingly become victims of domestic violence and abuse at the hands of their husbands,partners or boyfriends.In Asian societies especially India due to societal pressures,financial and family pressures or concern for their kids women usually suffer in silence.They are afraid to leave the abusive husbands.I have also seen where husbands or partners equate love with the abuse.What is the situation in western societies? Do you know of cases where women have stood up against the violence and asserted their independence? What do you think about domestic violence and god forbid if you ever become victim how will you cope up?Will you suffer in silence thinking about social security and your kids or will you fight against the abuser?
