What I know about string theory is that the basic building blocks of everything are tiny vibrating strings. All strings are the same, the only difference between them is the speed at which they vibrate. The different vibrations cause different particles. For string theory to work, more than the traditional 4 dimensions must exist. Some string theories describe 10 or 11, and the bosonic theory describes 26. String theory combines quantum mechanics and einstiens theories because einstiens theories don't work at the subatomic level.
