Well in my opinion there was no point inviting others to join gmail.Yahoo doesnt needs any inviting. So gmail shouldn't do that as well.

I joined gmail over a year ago my oldest email in my first gmail account is from December of 2006. When I joined I needed the referral and ever since then it is the only email I have used as my main account. I think that I ever joined before December but have since deleted the first emails. So I really cant be sure of the exact time that I joined. I think that alot of people use gmail and will continue to for a long time. So many people use gmail nowdays that theres really no need for invitations. They are well known now and from what I can tell extremely well liked.

this is the only reason, i think gmail has stopped this feature. because invitation feature was stopping people to have their gmail account if they dont have any known gmail a/c holder. anyway, this feature will increase gmail users list.

The invite system was there because they want to make a market value like a high quality site got my point it was a publicity stunt when you heard from your friend that .dude have you heard about gmail they allow signups only to invited .dude i wana make an account there this was the stratagy of gmail so now enough publicity they just want more users so they canceled it ... happy mylotting

I agree with the previous response, due to the exclusivity gmail got even better brand value and I think it was also the premier 1 GB mail client at one time. But despite their strategies they have maintained their high standards and provided excellent service to all. I still feel they should keep it on invite basis only. It would prevent miscreants from abusing the gmail account to a certain extent. Otherwise people will start shifting to other exclusive providers. On the other hand it is providing more revenue to gmail so I doubt they will ever revert back.
