hi, good news, library cards are free for people in my city. i've been borrowing books from the library for almost 10 years. the fee for each card went up from 8 yuan / two year to 8yuan/ per year and then 10 yuan/ a year. now, recently, it's totally free, only pay a 50 yuan deposit. but the fine for overdue books are twice as much as it used to be. last week i paid a fine for 6 yuan. :(

In Ireland it is 5 euro a year to be a member of the library. It is free for children and old age pensioners. There is a late fine too but in my particular library our librarian is very nice and doesnt charge!! I dont know how much it is supposed to be, I think something like 50 cent a week which is small enough.

how nice your librarians are. here, the fine is 20 cents per book per day. i normally borrow 12 books at a time with two cards. and i often pay a fine over 500 cents. poor me.

About how much is 50 yuan in U.S.D? Im so sorry I keep forgetting, ever since joining mylot I have really been considering studying more into the currencies, even when I read of them in the paper Im confused. The fees at my regular library I go to is: 5.00$ (dollars) if you lose your card and need a replacement, then 1$ after 2nd $0.25 (cents) for late DVDs and CDS, Hardback, Non-Fiction Paperback $0.10 (cents) for Fiction paperback, childrens books and DVDS/CDS, Magazines 7-day loan books (brand new books) late fee is $1.00 (dollar per day) Its when you lose something (or in my case, the library loses it) that you really pay because they charge you full cost and a replacement fee for processing that can be whatever the decide. I just coughed up $65.00 dollars for a library book that was a Interlibrary loan from the local University because they have a flat-rate fee which is ridiculous and it doesnt matter what it is, it could be a magazine for all they care. I heard the kids are very nonchalant about working at the library and things get lost a lot and you have to keep the receipt, Im still certain it will show up just at a different library. I often pay fines to the library and I know this is silly but I dont even mind, its like 3 dollars a week sometimes but I just see it as my donation to the library and dont sweat that part but if they do go hiking up fines I think I will not like it because it can really add up if your taking 20 items out for your children, know what i mean?

I live in the US and library cards are free here. I think that they should be free, as it encourages people to read more. If we had to pay for a card, not many people would go. The fines for over due books are pretty big here. I had to pay 15 dollars for a fine not too long ago.

yeah, you are right, by offering free reading, people study and enrich themselves a lot, and that's saves budget for the government on education.

Dear friend, In my place in South India it is not free and it would be given only after giving the membership fee and if lost another fine and if taken books and belated another fine too. Hence it should be bit careful if one who do not spent much money may take books but keep it in secure place and give it back in time. Each library has its own fine and membership fees. Library to library this fees and fine too varies.

I live in the United Kingdom and I am 44 years old. Library cards have always been free since I have been born, don't know how long before I was born.

the place where we stay really sucks. i often hear that countries like britain and america, people do not have to pay anything to read in the library. and libraries are places where they could spend when they are bored in the whole afternoon.
