Buddha never intended on being worshipped as a god. He was against being worshipped. And its irritating to see these statues that depict a fat bald man. Buddhist was a skinny starved prince who wanted to end suffering. Im in no way a buddhist, but this was a topic in my world history class. what do you think?

Sidhartha Guatma (the historical Buddha) was about all reaching enlightenment. In no way was he a God as he was simply enlightened and showed others the way to enlightenment so that none shall remain in ignorance being blinded by illusion. He had a lifestyle of abstance as he did not believe in indulgence as that was a way of the world not the way of enlightenment. Thank you for the interesting topic, but I am sure that all of the true Buddhists do understand that Buddha is not a God but rather a messanger showing the path. He was an enlightened soul the same as Jesus, Muhammad, Lao Tsu, etc... Have a great day!!

Yeah the True Buddhists know that Buddha is not a god. But there are those who worship him and have the statues. I wish more people would understand that. Thanks for you response.

I think that with those that understand the facts keep a Buddha statue to remind them of the path of the Buddha the same as those Christians that keep a crucifix. The Crucifix nor the patron saints are to be worshiped as Gods but rather to remind us all of the golden path that they are partaking, something to give a little reminder. As for Buddha being a fat bald guy, the bald head is because most buddhists believe that the past remains in the hair thus they shave it so it is fitting for him to have a bald head. As for the fatness... maybe it is for astetic (sorry for the spelling) reasons. It would be hard for a person to see someone that is obvously malnurished and find peace in that. Thank you for the response and have a great day!!!

Buddha is NOT a god and I wish more ppl would learn and/or grasp that fact...He was a man, a man who made a choice, a drastic one that in the end gave many of us hope, understanding and so on should we follow his teachings and what he learned on his journey....I DO NOT worship any god, let alone Buddha.. As for the statues though, I have a beautiful little Jade one myself and I dont find them irritating in the slightest in fact I find them quite beautiful simply because of what they represent which is Hotei...or at least thats what some believe...for me its more than that..I actually LOVE the fat happy Buddhas to be honest with you

I wish more people would learn that. As for the statues what irritates me is that people worship some fat bald guy which doesnt depict the true buddha. Im not a buddhist Im a christian but I dont really see them as true buddhists.
