Was Alfredo right to tell Toto not to return to his hometown?

The scene in which Salvatore (Toto) tells his mother that it's only an hour's plane trip from Rome to get back to his hometown has to be one of the most heartbreaking in cinema. His mother's response "Don't tell me that after all these years" is very moving. But it transpires that he didn't come back because Alfredo, the projectionist who became his mentor, told him not to. Does the audience's view of Alfredo change when this is revealed? Or is Alfredo's behaviour justified by the fact that Salvatore has become a successful director?

Was Alfredo right to tell Toto not yo return to his hometown? I am really not shure, but there is a phrase that said this: "when you travel, you do that not to discover a new place, you do this because you want to escape from the place you are" In other words, it can have a lots of means, maybe to grow up, to forget everything and start a new life, or maybe to be a better men, and try to find a better place to stay... be more important and get more money, and stop losing his time in a small town. Well, this movie is one of the bests i have ever seen, and i think that Alfredo tell that to Toto because he loves him, and wants the best for him. Hope this answer be enough for this topic.
