PTC site and renting referal, does it really pay?

Hi all. I am just starting with doing PTC sites and was wondering if it is possible to really earn a profit from renting/buying referals or by upgrading to a premium account? I just have a standard account on a few sites. If you are making a profit which site do you think is the most economical?
