Superstitions...... How Superticious are you?

September 7, 2008 10:57am CST
An irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome. It is a fear of the unknown or unpredictable Superstitious beliefs give us the illusion of control over events that we don't understand. With our superstitious beliefs and practices, we try to control things that aren't even known to be controllable. Four is an unlucky number in Japan, Korea, and Hawaii. The word for 4, shi, is homophonous with the word for death, although here to find a 4 leaf clover be considered as lucky (as child id spent AGES looking for one lol ) The number 13 is considered as unlucky to many.. eg Friday the 13th Many religious believers correctly see other religions as full of superstitions. The foundation of one religion is considered base superstition by another Religious superstitions give us the illusion of power over important life and death matters. All we need do is utter prayers, or chant, or dance with our feathers pointed in the right direction and we can overcome sickness and death, bring on good luck and ward off evil. We have invisible allies in the sky, the air, the earth. We can call on them when the going gets rough.. There is no logic in why we do certain things as scared to get bad luck.. eg Overturning the salt is very unlucky, but spilling the vinegar makes no difference. Why salt should be revengeful and vinegar forgiving has never been told. A black cat crosses your path is bad luck walking under a ladder is unlucky (we walk around ladder onto road and risk getting run over) To break a mirror gives 9 years bad luck To wear an opal is bad luck, but rubies bring health. How these stones affect the future, how they destroy causes and defeat effects, no one pretends to know. We will do one thing to overcome something else.. Because its the unknown and we are unsure if it will bring us bad luck.. eg walking under ladder you must walk back under ladder to undo the bad luck.. Spill salt will bring demon so to throw little over your shoulder it vanish, and so on. If something bad happens on friday 13th, we believe it wouldn't have happened if had been Friday 14th lol Many of these superstitions maybe come from our ancestors and get past on Do you have any superstitions? or maybe your family or someone you know? you know why you do what you do or avoid something?

Hi Karen How are U Nice discussion and u r right Fear of Unknow is ruling the World since Centruires, anything a human mind cant comprehend, they start fearing it. Well, i dont mind if black cat cross my car Or i dont mind if i have any event on 13 i dont mind if salt fell or mirror broken I believe that in life things happen and no day is bad, no event is worse. nothing bring bad luck, but sure its deeds of humans So its ok for me, u can invite me on dinner on Friday , 13. with black cat with u, and u can split salt ( sure on table not in my dish as then i might not be able to eat , not cause of superstition but due to taste) and i dont mind if broker mirror, LOL Take care

I have heard all the old superstitions like if a black cat crosses your path you will have bad luck,or if you open an umbrella in the house you will have bad luck,or if you walk under a ladder you will have bad luck,I have never been a superstitious person and I do not think my fiance are my parents are either and it was not to long ago that I was walking through my parents house with an open umbrella and nothing bad has happened to me yet.

hi mandykaren. i am superstitious to some extent. i have a watch which i feel is very lucky to me. i always wear it whenever i go out to something important. my work gets done too. generally when i go out, if i get any obstruction my mom asks me to sit down for a few minutes and asks to drink some water. apart from this she also follows certain other things. thanks for sharing.

I am not in so it in superstitious belief. I will based my belief only on scientific field which is much more credible that anything else. Superstitious are beliefs which is very hard to understand. It will need a lot of basis in making it clear to anybody.

maybe you do have at least one, just that maybe you not aware of it as it can get past on from family so just becomes a habit that you do.. Superstitions are the unknown, we not understand the reason behind any of them, but we will do it because we don't know if could come true or not. thanks for sharing and take care
