Hello. I would like to start a discussion about the best canon lenses for macro photography. Who know about it, who can tell me what is the best (or are the best) lenses to do close-up pics of insects, small animals, plants and flowers?

I shoot with Nikon, so I don't have any experiences with Canon lenses. However, I have seen some amazing macro photos taken with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens. However, for about half the price you can get a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro lens with a Canon mount. I've also seen some incredible macro photos taken with this lens. Sigma also has a 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro lens with a Canon mount. This one is about $100 more than the 50mm Sigma- but still a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Canon 100mm. Again, an excellent lens! Of course, if you don't want to spend the money on a macro lens, there are some less expensive macro alternatives! If you already have 2 lenses, you can try the reverse lens technique for macro photography. Or you can buy close-up filters (also known as diopters) that screw onto the end of your current lens. Additionally, you can buy macro extension tubes for your current lens. While these don't give you the same quality as a macro lens, they are much cheaper!

thanks a lot for this info, I am actually thinking about the Canon EF 100 mm f/2.8, but it is always good to know alternatives less expensive. Great info, thanks.
