Are there music search engines by tune?

Are there any search engines that let you search for a piece of music by approximating its tune? If such a search engine doesn't exist, I might consider delving more into it (and possibly creating it for fun) Thanks.

There are devices out there that can identify songs, but I think they are only on cell phones. The best thing to do is just to listen to songs on the radio and online and try to find what you are looking for, it will appear sooner or later. I know that a lot of the songs I was looking for did.

http://www.bored.com/songtapper/ Not exactly like you said, but on this, you tap the melody of a song and it tries to identify it. Its not perfect, but the database is pretty extensive.

I use a website called All Music. It doesn't work like the typical search engine, but I find it incredibly useful. You can look for music depending on genre, instrument, artist, mood, and theme. Awesome, right? I've found tons of good stuff when I searched for songs and artists by moods. That's how I ended up liking a lot of the bands I listen to today. I hope this helps.
