laptop irritating my skin

I usually have my laptop in my lap, resting on my legs. I have noticed that I have a patch of skin on one leg that is red and sore where the laptop was resting. I have sensitive skin anyway, but was wondering if it is caused by the laptop itself or the heat created by the laptop. I know the answer is probably to sit at a desk instead of having it in my lap, but was curious if anyone else had something similar happen and what they did to change it.

I'd look into a lap desk. It could definitely be the heat from the laptop irritating the skin on your legs. There are also laptop pads out there that redirect the heat. My sister has one and she loves it. She can't live without it now. Should look into it really.

I have had that problem, my laptop gets hot, so I use to put something over my legs if they were exposed. I use my laptop all over the place, watching television, on the couch or in the bed. so i went ahead and bought a desktop, one designed for laptops it keeps my legs cool and feels like a pillow while my laptop stays sturdy.

Hi, Erin. When I was having problems with my left shoulder and arm about 6 months ago, I would lie down on the couch and have the laptop propped up on my lap. I also had a red place on my thigh, too. I believe it was from the heat that was created by the laptop. Since I have been able to have my computer set up on my desk, the red area has almost gone away completely. I would say that the heat has affected the tiny capillaries just under the skin. There are little platforms that you can buy to put the laptop on and should keep it from heating up your skin.

Since I am a dude and am always wearing pants, my legs are safe xD! But well i've never tried putting my laptop on top of my legs without any clothings. It gets so hot its uncomfortable and annoying. But I guess that people with sensitive should avoid doing it since you could end up with a piece of skin darker than the rest of your whole body!

I would guess it is being caused by a combination of things, mainly the laptop simply resting on your lap and putting pressure on your leg and the heat generated by it. The heat is going to increase the diameter of your blood vessels and allow more flow. But by adding the pressure, you're preventing the smooth flow. This could be causing the redness and irritation. I know I get similar redness just resting my hand on my arm; for example, when my arms are crossed. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I'm not a doctor. If the problem remains and/or it gets worse I would definitely not keep it on your lap.
