Is it just me or is the Old Testament full of violence and hatred?

There is talk of killing, and God loving these acts... there are tales of incest, adultery and all sorts of things I find most distasteful. Then comes Christianity which claims the OT as holy as its NT, yet God is supposed to be a God of love... a God of peace, yet look at his history. I welcome all constructive comments and opinions.
