Do you give gifts to your teachers?

My brother's school has a weird policy: they require students to give gifts to their teachers during holiday season. While I like the idea of gift-giving, it's always struck me as funny to require the gift-giving. So, how many of you give presents to your teachers? What do you usually get them?

Your brother's school is indeed weird. But they probably want to inculcate a kind of love and gratefulness for the teachers? I get presents for teachers I think who has helped me in life somehow or another. Like those who gave me inspiration, motivated me to be a better student in all aspects and such. Not a teacher who can purely teach well. I think you get the drift. But being a teacher is a tough job... really. :)

Oh sorry, forgot to add what I get for them. I get them stuff like cakes, cause you can buy in bulk and distribute to the teachers. Or pens, very practical indeed!

It is weird that you are made to give a gift, as a gift is voluntary present. I gave gifts to some of my teachers, only the ones I really liked. I always tried to find a book they liked to have as gift.

There is quite enough peer pressure in schools today without adding to it by having to give bigger, better and more expensive presents to teachers. When I taught briefly at a girls only school I was offered presents and had to diplomatically turn them down as I didn't want to set a precedent for the others. I was flattered, of course, but I explained that the best possible present they could give me was to study hard and enjoy the subject. haha The subject I taught was maths!!

They require it? How? What are they going to do if the student doesn't give the teacher a gift? Not like they could fail him or give him detention for not doing it, right? My mom worked as a kindergarten aide for several years, and she always wished the parents wouldn't send in gifts! She saw it as a waste of their money, for the most part, as a person only needs so many mugs or tree ornaments. And it always seemed that the families that could afford it the least would be the ones to give the most elaborate gifts.

Wow, that is weird. Gifts should be given if you want to give them not because they are a requirement. Also, there are many familities that cannot afford to give gifts. I agree with smackman's comment about there being enough peer pressure in schools without that extra pressure. It would most likely cause competition between the students to get nicer gifts and those that cannot afford to might feel bad. Do the kids get anything in return? I don't think that policy's fair. Anyway I've never given any of my teachers gifts before except in elementary school. I made a play dough bowl with little fruits in it for the teacher lol Unfortunately it wasn't the type of dough that would harden.
