Did you play with these in church?

While at my uncles memorial service over the weekend, I was reminded of things we used to do in church when I was little. The memorial service took place at my grandmothers church, which I attended quite often. I smiled when I saw that the hat things were still there. Apparently there's been little need for renovation and they have the same pews as when I was little. I wanted to just play with the hat hooks, but knew (as an adult) that it wasn't acceptable... Do you remember those hat hooks from church? Did you play with them????

That's what those things were for? Fifty years old and I never knew that, oh I feel so stupid. I remember them well, in my Church you had to push a little button and it opened the bottom of the clasp - I guess to hold the rim of the hat. I always thought they were for hanging the hymn books.

My grandfather always hung his hat on them so I thought that's what they were for... Us kids always played with them and they'd make this loud noise. Of course, we'd get our hands smacked! Very fond memories :)

I looked it up and your correct, they are for men's hats and I learned something from your discussion, thanks for that and the BR!

I have never seen a hat hook in a church. Here in CA we do not wear to many hats so I guess that is why we do not have hat hooks in church.

I don't see them in the newer churches, only the old ones. I just remember my grandfather putting his hat in there when we were little.

hmmm.... Let me see... (too bad it was church and I couldn't take a pic!) They're black metal, about 1.5 inches tall. At the top is a round button that you push in and it lifts the bottom part up so you can put your hat brim into it. When you release the button it clamps down on the hat for you.
