Stock tumble...

I was reading the news earlier on Yahoo! a while ago and I came across an article that said that the stocks tumbled in New York. It was so bad that 2 huge companies went filed for bankruptcy. What exactly happened there, does anybody know? How does this affect the rest of the world?
