Update on cousin with thyroid cancer

I talked to her over the weekend and she found out that she does have the type of cancer that's easy to get rid of, thank goodness. She also has a goiter on one side of her thyroid. She goes to a specialist this Friday to see if he thinks they can go ahead with surgery, or have to wait and shrink the goiter first. Your vocal chords are so close to the thyroid, that one slip and she could be hoarse, or without her voice for the rest of her life. So, I'm waiting to hear more.

That is wonderful that she has the type of cancer that can easily be cured. I hope she gets helpful info from the specialist and that the goiter shrinks. I sure didn't know anything about the vocal chords or that a person could be hoarse if the surgery isn't conducted properly. I wish her the best of luck.

Yeah, a thyroidectomy is a very tricky surgery that requires a skilled surgeon. It's best to get one that's done alot of them if possible.

The waiting would drive me crazy too for something as serious as this. I really hope everything works out for her. :)

She went to the doctor again and they took more blood work. They are checking to see if she has hypothyroidism. If she does, she'll have to take meds before having surgery. I would be a nervous wreck walking around knowing I had cancer and them just leaving it in there!

Could they just remove her thyroid and put her on medication?

Yeah, that's what they will do, it's just figuring out when. Since the thyroid gland is so close to the vocal chords, the goiter might make it impossible to do surgery right now. After they shrink the goiter with meds, then they will remove the thyroid.
