I felt kinda weird doing it but, I stopped traffic as there was a paint turtle in the middle of the road trying to get across. I walked into the road and made people wait while I picked it up and put it on the other side in the grass. Has anyone else ever stopped for an animal in the middle of the road to help it? My mom laughed and said I always did that kind of thing and my kids just loved it as they wanted to take the turtle home lol. Kat

Good for you! I did a similar thing once in Australia but it was an echidna! It was really funny actually because an echidna has really hard spines like a porcupine and are actually quite large so I had no way of picking it up! I tried with my jumper and with a towel but failed miserably. In the end I just steered it with my feet off the orad and into the bush. They move pretty slowly too so it took a while!

Echidna - The echidna is an Australian mammal known as a monotreme. A monotreme is a mammal that lays eggs and the platypus tht is also from Australia is another type of monotreme.
Here you go! The echidna is very unique because it is a monotreme; which means "egg laying mammal"! The platypus which is also from Australia is a monotreme as well.....

It is sooo cute! I used to have a hedgehog which looked similar without the long nose. I miss that little guy. :) Thanks for the pic! Kat

Good for you. Painted turtles are actually so endangered that it is illegal to take them across state lines. You did a good thing. I am sure the turtle appreciated it.

Awwww, good for you Kat4676! I would have done the same thing. When I first started driving (about 100 yrs ago now), a rabbit jumped out in front of me and I ran over it. I stopped, got out of the car, picked up the rabbit and took it home. I was crying all the way and when I got home, I begged my Father to bury it for me. The family still picks at me about that one!

Your mom raised you right, it was kind and humane and the right thing to do. Protecting the weak and the vulnerable to the best of our ability is one of the few things we can do to make our world a better place. You get MY seal of approval, though I might not have given it to you at the moment you were holding me up in a traffic jam-- lol!
