how long when a person says "a couple of seconds"?

most movies i saw has lines wherein the characters say "give me a couple of minutes". Then the character sometimes took hours to do the job and some movies took the job in less than a minute. i know that this statement is a figurative language but i really want to know how long really, in approximation this statement is really long.
This phrase is almost and widely used in the american language.

Well, this is yeah, the one of the most common phrase used not only in movies, but in our day-to-day lives... Its so common that, we really have forgotten the meaning, of the phrase, and mean this phrase the least.
We never think what we just spoke and straight away speak - "Gimme few minutes..." and then, we just have to understand that this few minutes are nothing but uncertainity. 
This doesn't signify anything else except that "I will finish it, I don't know when exactly"
I too have got the habit of speaking, "Give me two minutes..." lol.. I don't have the habit of "couple" minutes..
