Nerds vs. Geeks

Back in high school and college, you'd hear a lot of people calling other people nerds or geeks. How would you differentiate the two? What distinguishes a nerd from a geek and vice-versa? I think the main difference is that nerds are really intelligent but are anti-social and only band together with other nerds. Geeks are also really smart but are not necessarily anti-social. They could have friends that are not geeks but when they talk to their friends, they sometimes make them feel a bit dumb. What do you think?

I think nerds are book smart. They are good because they study well however, they're not street smart - they're really only focused on what's written and what they've read and they'll counter whatever argument you have with something from a passage in a book. On the other hand, geeks are good at technology and are somewhat street smart in that aspect because they learn about what they know by experimenting on their own computers and gadgets :) Thank you for the response on my discussion!

Okay, so I'm going to be extremely technical with this response...because I'm both a nerd and a geek. A nerd is an adjective for a person who is intelligent, but lacks social skills and is highly obsessive. He/she shows interest in the usual stereotypical nerdy stuff i.e. superheroes, books, technology, science fiction, etc. A geek is slang for a person who is eccentric and is enthusiastic about a hobby/intellectual pursuit. A geek is an expert/a know-it-all in one particular area, so there are Science geeks, Maths geeks, Grammar geeks, LOTR geeks, Marvel geeks, Bug geeks, Pokemon geeks (e with an accent), etc. A nerd is basically all these "geeks" put together. So, I'm a nerd but at the same time I'm also a LOTR geek, a Maths geek, a Physics geek, etc (the list is too long :P). A geek may not necessarily be a nerd, but a nerd will always be a geek. This is similar to the fact that all triangles may not be right angled, but all right angled triangles will always be triangles or all real numbers may not be whole numbers but all whole numbers are real numbers. That's my way of interpreting both the terms. :D This venn diagram sums it all up.
