Why is that newborn babies smile and laugh a lot when they are sleeping but dont at all when they are awake? Have you ever noticed this before? I was just curious as to why this was.

Newborn babies are great ,they are so delicate and fragile, and you just want to keep cuddling them, but I was always told thast when a very young baby smiled that it was wind that was trapped, and that the baby wasnt smiling it was just full of wind .but lol that theory may have all changed by now,as mine were babies years ago,but they are really cute

This is completely my own theory...when they are awake, they are too busy becoming aware of the world around them to concentrate too hard on figuring out how to smile. When they are asleep though, their little new bodies relax and their smiles are as easy as breathing. I don't think a brand new (meaning a few weeks or younger) baby actually knows how to intentionally make the muscles form a smile so when they smile when they are awake I think it's because they have figured out that if they move their mouth they get a reaction from you. That's why tiny babies seem to make so many faces...they're just trying to figure out which one is the right one!If you think about it, a smile is one of the most relaxed positions so naturally it happens more when the baby is asleep. (as for the laughing...one of mine would laugh so loud he would wake himself up which then of course would startle him! Luckily he grew out of that by the time he was 2 months old)

lol. awww! That is so cute. Yeah that whole theory does make sense. My son is 5 weeks old and I have just been watching him a lot.

I have always been told that babies smile when they are sleeping because they have gas:) A babies smile is precious. Whether they be awake or asleep. I love it when babies smile...it melts my heart.

Lol, newborns are so adorable. They actually do it when they are awake, too. It's just that they sleep most of the time. Scientists say newborns can't smile or even laugh, at least not as a reaction or initiation like we do. They say, it's just gas that makes them seem to smile or laugh. Whatever! It's still cute.
