Do dogs understand each other when they bark?

I keep on asking myself why dogs bark at each other all the time...Sometimes, there are soft sounded barks but oftentimes, it's a rough one... Do you think that there's a certain message hidden behind different kinds of barks? Anyone with an idea, your comments are very much welcome. :) HAPPY MYLOTTING!

They bark at each other because it's their way of communicating. If you've ever noticed a dog that growls at another one, that would mean that the dog growling feels threatened. So every bark is different and yes, they are messages behind those barks.

I reckon they do, because they bark differently for each instance, I can tell why the dog next door is barking, so I would imagine other dogs pick up the same sounds and know what it is all about,...
