I had heard that depression was inherited. Well I have been off and on with anti-depressants for a while now. Not long ago I found out that my mother and my father are both taking anti-depressants. It made me think about depression being inherited. what do you think?? Is it inherited??

Yes, it is. I can say that for myself. I'm using anti-depressants since I was a teen (13 years old only). When I was a teen I had no reason at all to be a sad person. I has a popular girl at school, with lots of friends, a good student...well, I had everything we suppose to be necessary to be an happy teen. However, I has a sad person. In my family depression is an "old friend" already. Thanks God, there is medical help now, nothing like in the past. Btw, you can also do things to help yourself. Don't stay at home too long, try to socialize, go to gym...do things that make you happy and don't think too much on sad things.

Getting too much emotional and worrying negative things are main leads for depression, i think its not inherited

I think it definately is in some cases but certainly not all..As its been mentioned it can be caused by certain situations/life events or a chemical imbalance OR IMO a combo of both which is my case...the chemical imbalance already existed and certain life events starting when i was just a child just made the whole thing worse....Both my kids are prone to depression but we're not sure if its part chemical OR just life events however MY father was an addict (which goes hand in hand with depression), THEIR father was depressed and killed himself and I of course have dealt with depression, like I said, since childhood..

I do think some depression is genetic. My father was bipolar and my oldest brother turned out to be also. They could not survive without medication. I have 6 brothers and sisters and half of us (including myself) have been on antidepressants. Although it is unfortunate to have - at least there is help for it.
