Blogging about personal issues and posting them publicly

I have read several articles about people posting blogs containing information that was hurtful toward others they were working with. They were posting what was going on at work and how good/bad they were treated by coworkers and how they felt about it. Several of these companies found the blogs and terminated the employees. My question is: does a company have the right to fire an employee based on what they post on a blog? And do you feel working and posting on the internet can impact your chances of getting future jobs or your current job?

Saying something in a blog is just like you said it in person or to other people. Just because there is a computer and a whole network between you and the person reading doesn't mean that you can't be held accountable for what you do online, especially in a blog. I believe that if a person blogs something that would get them fired, then it is the same as having the boss walk in on the person doing something that would be cause for getting fired. The internet is a relatively new medium (getting pretty old though) but that doesn't mean it excludes people using it from accountability. I do think that it will and it should affect your chances of getting a job or keeping your current job.

When you post anything on your blog you are publishing it to the world. You can say horrible things about other people, but anyone who does this should think how they would feel if someone was posting about them on a blog and other people were reading it? If lies are being posted about a business or company by an employee I think serious action should be taken by the employer. If what is posted is true, the bad employer will still want to sack the person who posted it. Now if you are applying for a new job, your potential future employer can check up on your internet activity. If they find a blog on which you have said something nasty about your previous employer, or about your work colleagues, it does not matter if it's true or not, they will not want to give you the job because they think you may start posting about them in the same way.

A colleague of mine posted personal issues about her place of work on her blog. She was asked to remove it as one of her colleagues reported her to the boss. I don't think that they have a right to fire a worker but I think they do have a right to ask the worker to amends posts in which they were hurtful to the others.

I have found blogging to be a good release for pent-up frustrations but I have never used it in a negative way where other people are maligned or criticized unfairly. Companies will always try to put themselves in a good light and they can be ruthless when employees "turn" against them.

I don't think you should get fired for stating what you feel. However, I think you have to be careful about how you say things just to avoid burning any bridges. I have written articles and blog posts about dealing with co-workers, but I have never used names or exact details. I try to keep mine more generic to avoid making waves.

i think that such people are the one's whom no one listens and they just want to open their hurt out.further it can also help them ease their pain no, i have come across some news that some bloggers have been arrested in Morocco and malaysia for anti-government blogging. so this thing is possible and who is going to ask the question... internet is a vast medium for finding jobs, what you need is the right palce to be

I am one of those who post personal issues here in mylot. I even posted I guess around 4 discussions about people in the company that I'm working for. These people are part of my life, they've done things that somehow affected my way of life. It's not the company, it's the people in it. I see nothing bad about talking about my life and the people in my life. I don't say anything that isn't true or would harm the company though I never really divulge the company's identity here in mylot. Well, if an employee is publishing derogatory remarks or any statement that will scandalize or put the company's name or business in jeopardy, I guess it can be a good case for investigation. But the company should give the employee a due process. I'm not sure if blogging about your experiences in the company will affect your future employment, I've never actually heard of it happening in mylot people.

I don't think you should get fired for posting about your thoughts on the internet. Unless of course you have violated your contract by doing this then maybe that would be wrong. For example if it was about a corporate secret then it would really be very bad. However if it was just the employee's thoughts about his coworkers etc. then I don't think the company should terminate the employee because we all have the right to speak our minds.

I won't do that, it's like exposing your private lives to everyone.
