If you are living in a country which leaves you in freedom whether to wear the burqa (burkha, burka or burqua) or not, would you wear it or not? What is the reason that muslim women wear this garment?

My wife is already a Muslim but she is not wearing burqa for her in Kuwait that some of the women is also wearing this kind of practice for their belief but they are mostly in Saudi not a Kuwaiti woman for Kuwaiti woman or the same way with my wife are just wearing headjob like hairnet to cover their hair......and if the woman is Married they will always keep their hair with their beauty alone to their Husband's eyes and I know it is kind of selfishness but truly the woman's hair would attract the Mans desire......

Kuwait has had to back off on the sack-cloth dress code by government decree. This has happened as a result of the American assistance they sought when Saddam annexed Kuwait. It is inevitable that the Emir and Majlis need to keep the appearance of moderation going, but for how long is the question? The more fundamentalist clerics are seething and preaching, while from outside of Kuwait there is a lot of pressure on the Kuwaiti clergy to enforce the burqa alongside Saudi Arabia.

It is interesting that Moslem men have responded to your post with archaic and essentially self serving and chauvinistic comments. Having lived and travelled in Islamic countries I count many Moslem women as my friends. And as a woman I have discussed the topic of burqa with my friends. Most women wear the burqa under pressure of family, community and society. A woman in Saudi Arabia has no choice at all. Egyptian and Turkish women do have a choice and many exercise the choice, and yet among the poorer people exposure and restraints imposed by fundamentalist mullahs the pressure is intense. Irshad Manji, a muslim woman has spoken about the abuse and coercion that is endemic in Islamic families, even when they live in civilized countries like Canada. In the UK and in continental Europe where Moslems have been allowed to emigrate and live, they have chained their daughters and continue to persecute them with inflicted hijab values. See http://www.irshadmanji.com/ and read her book. The trouble with Islam today. If you can read Arabic, Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia, Persian or Urdu a fre electronic copy can be downloaded. English copies need to be paid for. Very few Muslim women wear the burqa out of choice. Most are forced.

It seems to be a debatable point in Islam. It is not dogma and from what I learned it depends on the customs of the place that Islam is practised in.

Lol, are you trying to lead us to believe a Muslim woman could dare to come here and say "I don't like wearing it, it's hot and I'm beautiful, I want the world to see me"? You're funny...

The Hadith (sayings of Mohammed) is the main source of canonical injunctions about the wearing of Hijab, which literally means veil. There is much debate on whether the headscarf alone constitutes hijab or if it is mandatory to wear burqas or complete covering. In western countries enforcement of hijab is achieved through a combination of financial incentive, threat and in some instances actual violence. In a 2001 survey over 70% of French muslim women interviewed said that they wore head covering because of fear from extremist and violent islamic males.

I think Muhammad made women wear them so no one would see their bodies bruised from beatings. It's like Queen Elizabeth started the style of the huge dresses so she could hide the fact that her body was crippled. I am free to wear one if I want. I choose not to because I'm not a Muslim. I think some of them are very beautiful. I have a problem though with women being forced to wear the ones you have in the photo. Or women who are forced to wear all black. Women in many Islamic countries have no rights at all they are treated like dogs. My heart breaks for them...

Research your own facts. How did I insult the Queen? Don't you know the truth? It's taught in history books. This is a typical response from a Muslim male. Always trying to pretend women in Islam are free and bringing up the past to justify the present.

This is a typical ignorant response from people who really don't have a base for arguing. The response also questions the writers intellect and an arrogant streak insulting both the Queen and Muhammad in one swipe, which to many are held in great esteem. As per the forced argument, you just have to look at Western history and how women had no rights and abused left right and center. They were at the mercy of their husbands, hardly had any rights against abuse. If she spoke out, many labels were attached to her and often executed as a result. If you look more deeply, modern day Hindu India, has many traditional customs of women being burnt alive and little girls being buried alive. The caste system still allows a woman to be raped and no recourse for action. So you see, it is all over, past and present embedded in culture, so when Islam's virtues are for the rights and nobility of women, the males who abuse the system cannot be attributed as being the wider teaching of Islam. So please, research your facts correctly before making such statements/

Yes,Muslim women are required to hide their bodies from other men when they have to go out to safe guard their chastity and honor. This is a religious obligation from God Almighty and not a man-made concept.God Almighty clearly says in the last divine Book, the Holy Quran: "O,PROPHET (MUHAMMAD),ENJOIN YOUR WIVES,DAUGHTERS AND THE WOMEN OF THE BELIEVERS THAT THEY SHOULD LET DOWN OVER THEIR FACES A PART OF THEIR OUTER GARMENTS;IT IS EXPECTED THAT THEY WILL THUS BE RECOGNIZED AND NOT MOLESTED.ALLAH IS FORGIVING AND MERCIFUL." (Surah Al-Ahzab 59/22...............The Holy Quran........) Please see how important this obligation is that God Almighty has ordered the ever-respected wives and daughters of our Holy Prophet(pbuh)first of all to wear Hijab while going out of their homes.Mind you some specific type of "Burka"is not obligatory rather any piece of cloth can be used to hide their bodies, face and toes........Then outer garments or cloth should not be tight enough to show the shape of female bodies. Please see the moral effects of Hijab on our society.A woman is never a show-piece for the lustful eyes of men.

Thanks for asking this question.I am a male and males are not supposed to wear Hijab. However my wife and daughters observe it for going out. Then Islam means submission to the will of one God Almighty and this is what we are doing.

Sometimes what you cant see (the forbidden fruit) makes you more eager to have it.

Am working here in Riyadh,Saudi Arabia..all muslim women are being covered all over and only the eyes that you can see, sometimes only the shoes for those who are very conservative. But wearing of this will vary from where you came from, like, if you are from syria, egypt or other parts of the middle east some just wear something to cover all over the body and they cover the hair and you can see the face. Staring at them is prohibited and once caught you are in danger...Muslim men are very protective to their women.

Music and me Thank you for that, and you are correct. Unfortunately, Saudi's have taken the whole issue of pardah to far in the Islamic sense. Remember, the only Islamic requirement is the headscarf and loose clothing. If the face is to be shown then, no make up and beautification should be present. But in Saudi, women cannot even drive, which is going a bit far. In this case, as was the case with the Taliban regime and Afghan women, women are often presented with a corrupt view of Islam. They have limited rights and cannot go out to work. This is absurd in Islam. And correctly identified, some of the enforces of these laws, tend to penalise western guests for looking at women. This is again unislamic. Guests of any nation, tend to respect the cultures and beleifs of another regardless - so this practice baffles me. Remember one thing - men and women are equal in Islam - bar the physical strengths. Much is made of the veil, but remember, men are not allowed to gaze at women, and they too should wear loose clothing and support a beard. They are not allowed to mingle amongst women freely either.

In Malta Maltese women used to hide their hair by wearing a veil when they entered the church.
