What are the best places for single women to go to meet new people?

I am in the process of getting a divorce which will be final in about 30 days. Looking to meet new people. I don't like dating sites. Would rather meet someone face to face. I am 41 and don't like the club or bar scene. I was thinking if I had the money, I would go on a singles cruise but that is impossible for me to do right now. Anyone have any ideas?

does your city have any sort of singles group? or perhaps a church does (i know that a lot of churches in my city have stuff like that). what about speed dating? i guess it just depends on where you live.
