Still remember her and her husband Martin Burnham? The two American missionaries who were kidnapped by the Abu Sayaf Group on May 2001? Well she wrote a book recalling their year-long captivity under the militant Islamist group and i had the chance to read it. While reading the book, different emotions run through me. There's this SYMPATHY to those helpless hostages & civilians, who were just living their lives as peacefully as they could and yet suddenly an event had turned their lives into trouble. HATRED to the rebels who do nothing but kill and take innocent lives, who even uses the name of God in a blasphemous manner(the only thing that i will never understand on them). DISGUST to the government whose mouth has never complemented the actions of its hands and feet, who denies any forms of ransom yet negotiates in the dark with the terrorists. Seven years ago, it had became the headlines. Seven years later, still a national issue. The Abu Sayaf group may have been unheard this past few years, but do we need another Gracia Burnham? Another defenseless civilian get killed?

I have been seeing the book in national bookstore but i did not buy it. Maybe i can buy it on my next book shopping (next year). I think it is a good book and i know it's quite sad too. I also have seen in the news, probably a year ago about some complaints about the book.

I haven't read the book... but i was able to watch it on the History Channel... almost cried after watching it... because of all the sufferings that Gracia and Martin had to go through... just because of those selfish evil abu sayyaf... and i comment Gracia for her bravery... and that she did not let the experience ruin her personality... she remained strong despite off...

That book was well written. You can read it over and over again. It was a vivid picture how they were treated and what happened during their captivity. It is quite embarassing for Filipinos- but what happened really happened and we cannot change the history. The kidnappers were ruthless and I really do not know if what they did was fogivable.

I've heard of the book, but that was like a long ago right? With so many stuffs the government deals with, the others are being denied of, like this issue. I hate to say it but unless we have a dedicated leader this country will fail again and again and again. It's like everyone is concerned about their political stature and not the state of the people who elected them. And this issues of terrorist are gone. When there is a big issue in the government it's likely that they'll move again and starts kidnapping people. I tell you, this will be repeated again and again and again unless a dictator leads again. heehee. But then I'm serious, this will not end if the government don't act on it. It's like there's a big conspiracy going on, eh?
