An artificial eye for the three year old Kryzzy Anne Diaz might help her go on and continue life but the tragic past that cost her left eye will be etched in the innocent’s mind forever. A sad reality she and her family are now facing. At around thirty minutes past five in the afternoon, on June 2, 2008, Kryzzy Anne and her sister Karylle Anne left their house to buy food in Brgy. Signal Village Taguig, Philippines when a stranger who was said to be mentally deranged gouged out Kryzzy Anne’s left eye for allegedly mistaking it for a frog. Karylle, due to horror, ran to his father who just came home to call for help. “Kryzzy Anne’s father was so terrified when he heard about what happened to his daughter. He ran as fast as he can to save the innocent child.” said Jurita Olvido, the Taguig social worker handling Kryzzy Anne’s case. Her family waited for three months for the wounds to heal and now, Kryzzy is given a medical grade acrylic prosthetic eye sponsored by Taguig City Mayor Freddie Tinga. In a newspaper interview, Mayor Tinga said that giving Kryzzy Anne an artificial eye is the least that he can do to help her lead a normal life. “We may not be able to give back her lost eyesight, but at least we can enable her to learn to have a clean vision of her future.” the mayor said. Jurita Olvido said that the child was coping well after going through debriefing and post-trauma counseling sessions. After that tragic incident in Kryzzy Anne’s life, many good things came. Aside from having an artificial eye, she also received a scholarship and, since his father lost his job while taking care of his daughter in the hospital he received a job as a food attendant in the Taguig District Hospital as a post father’s day gift, all given by the city mayor. Olvido said that the suspect Rolly Semira, remains under the custody of the National Center for Mental Health for medical attention. He has been charged in court under the Violence Against Women and their Children Act.

Seems like this place is fortunate to have such a good mayor

Yeah but I guess any other city mayor would do the same thing for the little girl.

That is so horrible! Nobody should ever do that to a child! If only the mentally deranged person who did that could have been kept out of public before this happened! Hopefully she will heal mentally and be able to assume a normal life.

We are all hoping for that also. Let's just pray for the child to live a normal life after that phase in her life.

This is really sad this this could happen to anyone but seems so much worse when it was an innocent young child running to do an errand for her parents. The poor girl must have been absolutely terrified and who could blame her for feeling that way. For her sister who saw it all happen, what an awful thing to witness and she could do nothing but get per parents to help. In fact the entire family would have suffered as a result of this and possibly the parents are believing they could have prevented it in some way. As parents we suffer along with our children and when one of them is sick or injured all sorts of thoughts are what we could or should have done to prevent it from happening. The one “positive” thing is that Kryzzy Anne now has a medical grade acrylic prosthetic eye. Congratulations to the Mayor for organising for this as well as the help he has given to the entire family. It would be nice to think that all elected officials, Mayor or something else, would be so generous when something so traumatic as this happens to any of the citizens of the town. However the fact is that in most countries there are rotten apples in the barrel when it comes to elected officials but at least the town of Taguig have a good Mayor. Although this prosthetic eye will not give Kryzzy Anne back her sight in that left eye, she will still look like the other children and that is important. It is important for her self-esteem and she will no doubt be more positive about her appearance with the prosthetic eye than she would be with an empty eye socket. There is no doubt that she will have pain in that eye plus of course she will need ongoing counselling to get over this terrible trauma. Good luck to the entire family as I suspect that will have some awful times ahead of them as they come to terms with this awful event. It is not something that they will get over in a hurry or quickly, but it does seem that there is a lot of support available for the family.

This is really sad news especially when the victim is a child. I believe the mayor of the hometown really did give his full support on the matter and kudos to that. As for Kryzzy Anne, she would definitely be needing constant counseling for a long period of time. She needs to gain back her normal life, her confidence in herself, and to erase the stigma of the unfortunate incident. I hope that this news would not become a common one because we don't want to feel unsafe especially when it involves our children.

Yes that's true. The incident is very tragic and to think that a mentally deranged person did that to a child, it's like killing the parents while they are still alive. It's very hard for them. Now that Kryzzy Anne has an eye prosthetic that will be replaced every 3 years and have to undergo cleaning every morning after she wakes up, I think it would be very difficult for the child. It really left a mark and created a big impact on the child's life forever.

Good, in every dark tunnel there is always a light. Now I learned from this story, but I hope this will never happen again. I hope we could look an eye for our children and young ones around us to prevent this.
