Why do school plays at Performing Arts high schools always SUCK?

This goes for regular high school and ones that have performing arts (like the movie "Fame").... I don't know about everyone else, but the performing arts school i went to in manhattan, all the stage plays seemed like asinine MTV-ish comedies or remakes of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" or remake of something PG-ish... I was always attracted to more serious roles, I always wished we do something serious a stage version of the film "Seven" or something, you know something realisitc... don't get me wrong, I love comedies, but these weren't even adult-ish comedies. I always felt so undermined and under-estimated in my acting abilities at this school because of all the watered-down B.S. plays they put on. Why the heck is this? That's training to become bad actors in bad movies, if you ask me.
