If you get a penny a day and it doubles every day how much money would you have in a year? Can you do the math? I heard it was 1 million dollars but, I really dont know. Let me know what you come up with and how you came up with it!!!

A little bit of a currency conflict here... Are you converting this 1 penny (British) into Dollars (US,Canadian etc etc)??

I have never heard of the penny being related to the US currency before. Just looked it up on Wikipedia and it says... "The one-cent coin is often called a penny, but the U.S. Mint's official name for this coin is cent." It's amazing the stuff you can learn on here!

no i am speaking of an american penny. I dont know how to convert so i could not ask this question in any other currency. But if you know what would equal once cent. then it would work the same way.

I haven't worked out how long it takes to double the amount to $1M but it's considerably shorter than 1 year.

First, I'd like to share with you that I'm an individual who loves solving puzzles and brain twisters, including math puzzles. And I do attribute this to the fact that I am mesmerized with numbers because I'm an Accounting course graduate. And I told myself that I'd like to try this puzzle you mentioned, which I did. But I want to show you how I come up with the answer before revealing my own answer. Here goes. I did this in an excel worksheet; with determining the number of days in a year first, which is 365. Everybody knows this, of course. Then, on day one, I wrote 0.01 equivalent to a penny, which honestly I'm not sure if I'm correct or for this particular reason, my officemate; because he's the one who told me that a penny is equal to 1 cent. After this, I multiplied 0.01 with 2 on day 2 because it doubles. So I copied the formula until the 365th day. Then, what I had got me surprised and giggling. It exceeded a million; in fact, it even exceeded thrillions or octillions. I definitely thought I was crazy. Did I do it correctly or did I misinterpret it? But something suddenly striked me. Are you, in any way, associating this with earnings in the internet? Anyway, I do hope to know the answer from you soon. Regards.

it was just a hypothetical question although it would be nice if you could do that on these sites. Just keep all your money in a pay pal account if you have to cash out. Who knows? I dont know if i could do it i think i would end up cashing out before i got there. Good Job on figuring that out i started doing that but soon gave up. Math is not really my forte. But it really makes you think dont it?

i was actually trying to do this math in my head and i got confused after the 8 cents. i dont think it would add up to a million dollars but you would probably get a pretty decent amount of money in a year. after reading this i am really interested and thinking about trying to do a test and see how much you do "make" in a year, but probably after a while it would be hard to double the previous day.
