Chapter ONE 1 The ‘Storm Collateral’, a merchant boat turned research ship, drifted on the calm waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ponta Delgada one of the many Azores Islands. Fog, so thick none of the crew could see past their noses, wafted around them roiling like witches brew in a cauldron. Chase Harmon walked the length of the ship and stopped at the bridge, where he gripped the railing and looked out as far as the fog would allow him. The Captain, a tall and lanky man with a buzz cut, came to stand by him, holding a book in one hand and two beers in the other. “Want one?” he asked handing a bottle to Chase. “I don’t drink, but maybe this once I’ll make an exception.” He took the beer, unscrewed the top and pocketed it. “When you proposed the idea that Atlantis once stood around these parts I laughed. I mean every archaeologist and Atlantis seeker has come here and left with the same belief…either the lost continent never existed or was not around the Azores,” Captain Hyde said taking a swig of his Michelob. “Mr. Barnes told me to humor you, and that I’ve done.” “Nice to know someone thinks I’m funny,” Chase said looking back out over the Atlantic. The fog was beginning to thin, allowing the morning sun to glimpse the blue world below with its hazy red eye. He didn’t blame the man for how he felt, because for the longest time Chase hadn’t believed it. Johannes Barnes, the owner of the company he worked for, had allowed Chase to use all the resources at UnCharted’s disposal to find ancient cities that had been lost thousands of years ago along with relics and artifacts that accompanied these civilizations.
