Donkeys And Elephants

why is the democrat mascot an idoitic donkey and the republican have a nice never forgetful,strong elephant?

To me donkey can be seen as working animals and elephants as luxirous, hence the classic white elephant expression. I am not democrat or republican I have no idea what they meant by chosing an animal. (green party member) I love Elephants tho. I am not sure if they are never forgetful as I was never able to talk to one

I've always pondered this as well. An elephant is a strong, wise, independant animal with a fantastic memory and long lifespan. A donkey is a work animal with no redeeming characteristics other than being a good slave to humans. Im not a member of either party, but if it were between a donkey or elephant, I'd say an elephant is superior in just about every aspect to a donkey.

I'm not sure about Republicans, but I do know that a long time ago, there was a political cartoon that depicted a Democrat as a donkey. It was actually the Democrats that then chose the animal to be their mascot. I'm curious to find out why the Republicans chose the elephant now.
