Being A Good Neighbor

I have always been good to my neighbors. I go out of my way to get along with them and try not to have any major disagreements with them. I live in a rural area and there is this neighbor that lives a little ways down the road (out here we don't know what blocks are! LOL) from me and he is our garbage collector. He picks up the garbage for the majoity of our neighborhood and does a very good job. My problem is at night he burns it! He seperates it and burns things in the middle of the night and it is a terrible odor that travels to my house in the middle of the night. Nothing like waking up to burning trash! I don't really know how to approach him about this. I don't want to call the EPA and cause him any problems but it is getting ridiculous. Wonder if I could call and not give them a name? Is that wrong to do? He works hard at his job but isn't it illegal to burn garbage. Give me your thoughts on it.

If he is doing a good job I think you shouldn't call the EPA. The time when he comes to your place to collect the garbage smile with him and say that you need to talk to him and tell him not to misunderstand. Then you explain and tell him how uncomforteble it is when he is burning garbage. Just see how his reaction is going to be. If he says something negative tell him politly that you may have to inform the EPA.

You could be coy and say to him "Whew! What a smell came through my window last night. It smelled like buring garbage! You might want to be careful in case someone accuses you of burning the trash. You could get in trouble for that." If that doesn't appeal to you, call the local government on a pay phone and complain anon.

Good idea I may have to try that!
