What are the ways to make a blog more appealing and popular?

There are many new blogs being created every day by many people to project their views and ideas to the world of online viewers.But only a very few blogs succeed in drawing more attention and becoming popular,as desired.They keep on trying to add more contents and features to achieve more traffic,but fail to attract more viewers. What strategies do you suggest to the new aspirants to make their blog a quick success?

Traffic sites will get you visitors, but are they quality visitors ?
If you are looking for quality visitors, then you need to probably specialize on your blog, about a subject that you are informative about, and then make sure it offers good up to date advice.
Host the blog yourself so that you can then do the right search engine optimization on it.
Promote it as much as possible, trading links with other similar blogs etc.
