Do you throw away old books?

I love books and don't have the heart to throw away books even if they are already too old. Even my child's books are still in my book shelf. I keep every book that I buy and find time to read them once in a while. Books make me happy. I find them very nice inside the book shelf. I always have plenty of books in the house. Sometimes my friends borrow my fiction books and don't return them but I don't mind for as long as I have already read the books. Throwing away books is like throwing away knowledge. Books are very important in a person's life and they shouldn't be discarded. Should you have books that you don't use, donate them to schools who might need them. There are a lot of public schools here in the Philippines that need books. You can donate them to these schools. How about you guys out there? Do you throw away old books?

Do u think people will throw away books. Definetely not. May be some stupids will do it. Books are the teachers for us. We have to keep them safe. I usually give books to my friends. Some may not able to buy a book. For those, an information. All the books are available in the internet. Even the college books too. So, make use of it and develope your knowledge. Happy mylotting

I love books too. Whenever I by a book I don't throw it away, but I rarely buy books. I usually get them from friends or from the library. The ones that are just given to me because the previous owner is done with them I usually pass them on to the next person or donate them somewhere else. I'll never throw one away, it seems like such a waste! Even if they are old and beat up, the story is still the same and of just as good a quality as ever!

I don't think anyone throws away old books. It will be a crime to do so. My children's books, I gave away to schools for use in their libraries. All the other books are stacked up properly in cabinets. I pass on magazines to other people to read and pass on again.

Those might end up in the trash one day, cause thee problem is, I dont know where to put them anymore. I do have a lot of books in my house, used to read a lot, dont do it that much anymore really, either I dont have time or just dont feel like it.

It's the same with me - i never throw them. When i read one book i feel that part of it remains in me , so i guess i that's the reason i'm keeping them

I know just how you feel - I'm such a weirdo that I keep books because I think they may be worth something one day! I have my 86 year old mother's textbooks from when she was in grade school! But, I have a suggestion - what about donating them to a children's or senior citizen's center - even the library. Or you could even try selling them to a second-hand bookstore. Or what about starting a swap club - you could start one online too. Have fun! I just gave away a trunk full of kids' books to a friend who has a kid in pre-school!

I never throw away a book. I keep everything I've read for a while. About once or twice a year I will go through all of my books and set aside the ones that I know I won't ever want to read twice. I then try to sell them on craigslist.com or on amazon.com.

I would definitely agree with you as I too believed that reading books is a great source of knowledge and broaden one’s mind. I consider books as my best friends. I love reading and have tons of books in my room. Even my books in school are intact and in good condition place in big boxes. My sister and I have a heart for books. Some of my books look brand new though I have them for years and have been read many times. That’s how I care for my books. Some of our school books have been donated to public schools library.

i don't.. instead of throwing old books, i donate it to charity or to public schools... you know, you can help less fortunate students by simply giving away the books you've used in school.. in that way, you can help them have a brighter future...

Sell them in a yard sale. Give them to a church library, school library or local public library.Give them to a used book store. Give them to a mission store (Salvation Army, Goodwill etc.). Put them on e-bay. Give them to friends. You can even get a receipt to use for tax write-off purposes. Unless the book is falling apart, I can't imagine throwing it out. I am the church librarian at my church and I accept donations all the time. If I cannot use a book for our library, I put them on a sale table where the proceeds will go back into the library. If they do not sell there, I will give them to the Salvation Army thrift store in my town. They in return will be able to sell them and make money for their causes.

Also, put them in nursing home lobbies (along with used magazines), hospital lobbies or doctor's offices.

I did not throw all my old books. I really make sure that i have a place where i could put my books. A book is a good collection. Everytime there is a sale on the bookstores i always made it sure that I could buy one. Isn't it nice to see you have a lot of books neatly piled on a cabinet? happy mylotting

The book just piled up in my house. However, once a year , I donate some of the books to the charity, and it feels good to share the knowledge.

I normally donate them to the local charity shops, this way the literature is not lost and it brings in some money for a worthy cause.

No, I keep all my books! Like you, I love books so much and I would rather keep them and have them gather dust over time! I don't know what it is about stockpiling books. I guess I just love holding them and also having a regular look at my building collection. I know this sounds strange but, even if I run out of space, I would still collect books and I would even sit on top of them if I had to! I have glamorous images in my mind of how I want to be once I reach old age! I can picture myself on a cold winter's night, a good book in hand, a strong brew, sitting by the fire and indulging myself within my collection of books that I had acquired over the years! Now, back to reality! that's many years from now I hope. The donation of books that you don't want, that's a good idea. Happy reading. Andrew

Hi Masmaskia: No, I'm like you I never throw away books, not any book however I don't have a ton of them like I used too, over the years I've sold a lot of them at garage sales, gave a bunch of them away to other family members I still have several but my pile is a lot smaller than it used to be; Books are very special to me too and I've never understood how anyone can burn books of any sort you know? there are several classic/collectible types of books that I have too; I love my books (G)!

I dont throw away old books. I still keep them and place all of them in my book shelves. When there are charity event and there is in need of books i actually donate some of them to charity. I dont throw them away since i consider them as valuable. Other kids can still make use of it and it is something that will never be old for me since i can always review some things that i no longer remember through books. Although internet is the fastest way of searching i still love reading books and prefer reading them than just searching for the answer online.

i can't throw books..like as what you've said, i don't have the heart to throw it all away, eventhough our shelves are full, we just can't throw it..we love reading and even textbooks that we used during our school days are still with us, I agree with you that if you have nothing to do with your books, why not have them be donated in public schools, especially textbooks..i will never throw them away!

Absolutely not! I wouldn't have the heart to throw away a book, it would be like throwing a part of myself away - unimaginable. Instead I usually sell them to a half-price bookstore that resells them or I donate them. Sometimes schools and hospitals will take them. If you know any doctors/dentists with their own clinics, you could also ask them if they wanted to adopt your old books for their waiting room.
