I watched last night a show about wild bears and where they came from. One guy mentioned that pepper spray will make an aggressive bear leave you be. I am not one for harming animals but I do understand where this could be handy. Has anyone ever heard this as a way of protection?

Yes i have heard of it. This spray is normally carried by women and police. Its carried by women as a part for p[rotection because, when sprayed in the eye, the victim goes temporarily blind for sometime causing great burning and pain in the eyes. Its carried by police while arresting an aggressive suspect, without causing harm to themselves or others.

And yes, it does the same harm and has the same effect on animals.

The police carry mace, which is very different from pepper spray. Much more powerful and for the most part illegal for anyone but police to carry. Pepper spray is pepper extract in an aerosol base.

To be honest I have not really heard much about protecting yourself from bears, but I do live in England I would take some pepper spray if I was going anywhere where bears roam, they ain't swiping my picnic basket

Oh yeah, defeniatly. Pepper spray is a good way to protect yourself from a grizzly; it may make them take off...or if it doesn't they won't be able to see well and you can get away easier. At least it won't harm them forever.

I have a friend who goes to Alaska every year to gold pan. He carries a spray designed to ward off bears. It is so powerful it is outlawed in California. I doubt the standard pepper spray would work. Shoot, I accidentally got some in my eyes once and it wasn't too bad. Hurt like hell but if was interested in attacking some one i could have. A bear would probably just get angry.

i have carried pepper spray on my keychain for years now. i have never had to use it, thank God. and i would never purposely hurt an animal, either, but i have to say that if a grizzly bear was about to attack me or one of my family i would have no problem huring it.
