Let's talk about...weather!?

I live in an apartment complex, and today, while taking the elevator up, a neighbor in the elevator said: - Nice day, huh? And I responded politely: - Yeah, it is. So I'd like to hear you fellow myLottians theories about why we intend to talk about weather when we meet someone or when we fall out of subjects to talk about? What do you usually talk about when you don't have anything to say, or do you keep quiet? Do you talk about different subjects if you meet a stranger, neighbor or a friend? If yes, what? Cheers everyone!

Hello stardustkp, One thing I have never been good at is small talk so I do stick to the weather, I met an old lady yesterday she was walking her dog, I was coming back from picking my son up from school and I had about a 10 minute conversation with her, about our British weather, how ?...lol...and I have often thought why do we always mention the weather when passing a stranger..probably because we know we all have that subject in common and it's guaranteed a response.

I see. Yeah probably. It's a very good theory. But what makes me wonder now is why don't we talk about names, the place we are at the moment, problems and more? If I'm not wrong, we've got that in common too, and I haven't heard such things being brought into a discussion very often. Thank you for your response, and have a nice day, Scorpio! :)

well why don't you change it so when you next meet someone and they say "nice day don't you think" you stop and say well actually "what's your name ?" and take it from there.

That's a good idea. Though I don't usually mention the weather when I meet new people for just a short time (ie. elevators), but I'll keep that in mind.

Today the weather in my place is very sunny and hot. The people who work outside will feel uncomfortable doing their job. I was working at home and I feel little hot inside. But I can still do my job well. But I can't imagine how the people who work outside can handle their job with kind of weather. keep post Happy myLotting...

I'm having hard time to understand how people can work in such a heat too. Maybe they're desperate for a sunburn? Or perhaps because they like the heat? I seriously don't have a clue. Oh my, we surely can bring a lot of things into a regular discussion about the weather. So what's your theory behind all this weather-talk?
