I have two shih tzus. The hair can be a problem. Also because of their bulging eyes, they can develop problems. Both of mine have dry eyes. My littlest one has developed two corneal ulcers during his lifetime. They do have a good temperment and are lots of fun and very affectionate.

I believe they shed, but otherwise they are great dogs, I might get one too

Shis Tzu do not shed. I have had two shih tzu and i know that they do not shed. my last dog of 16 years was a cocker spaniel/terrier mix breed and i know she shed a lot. my wife was allergic to our mut dog named Scarlett. but the shih tzu does not shed and my wife has no complaints.

I Had a shih Tzu and the only bad things about him was his hair...it got matted very very easily. I can't think of anything else..he was my favorite dog of all time. He lloked good with a Bow in his hair..lol His name was Beauregard

Yes, if you can't groom your dog regularly. I have a standing appointment every two months at the dog groomers. Cost $30.00 a trip. Then you can avoid the matting. Or do it yourself. But this dog needs attention to its hair as it really grow fast! Matted hear is not a good for any dog. Especially around the dogs eyes and other parts that I can not explain because of "mature nature?" but keep the dog matt free takes a little work for a shih tzu

be careful a shih tzu is a good dog as I have had two of them. the first one I got was five years old. Gizmo was his name and he was "housebroken" but he was a dog who did not like people too much. on some ocassion he would nip me or my wife.but that was because I think he was abuse. Gizmo got run over by a car or truck as he got away from me one day and ran out into the busy traffic. Now I got another shih tzu. another male . His name is Reggie and I got him when he was six we ks old. he was the runt of the litter and he had a hernia to . so i got him and fixed his hernia and had him neutered. young. and reggie is a very good but it does cost for grooming as every two months his hair has to be trimmed! He has a gentle disposition but he is very leery of strangers that come to the house. Watch out with children too as these toy dogs don't understand children if the children are too rough on these lil guys. shih tzu mean lions mane.they are very proud.

The Shih Tzu is an ideal breed to keep indoors as they do not shred much like the spits. however, their hair need to be attended to daily or even twice daily. They are affectionate and can go along with older children, but have a tendency to become jealous towards babies since they want always to be attended to.
