further update on my son ...

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your helpful information and support while we have been going through this process with R. It seems that he has a condition which is called 'Conductive Hearing Loss' (glue ear I think) which means that he is hard of hearing in both his ears (30 decibels is considered a pass and we had to go up to 40 or 50 on some of the sounds for him to hear). This is apparently a fixable condition in most people and is caused by mucus solidifying behind the eardrum - a fairly common condition in kids. This is what has been causing his speech to be somewhat slurred and a few other behavioural things which we thought were just his nature, but now it seems it may have been as a result of his condition. I have an appointment on 5 November at the hospital ENT people and they will check his hearing again and then probably schedule him to have grommets inserted to clear up the problem. We are also setting in motion the wheels to have R's twin, A checked just in case as it seems there may be some link between this and the fact that they were prem (5 weeks) - don't ask me how. We are also waiting for a speech therapist to assess R just in case he needs extra help as we don't want him starting school next Sept with his speech as it currently is. To make this a discussion, my question to all of you is this : Have any of you had any experience with speech therapy for 3 year olds? Violetdreams

When my now 19 year old daughter was three she wasn't speaking much at all and I put her into speech therapy. She hasn't shut up since! LOL My nephew wasn't speaking at three and has been in speech therapy for about a year now. He says words now that are big words for a four year old to say. I myself was in speech therapy when I was younger because I had problem pronouncing my "R's". I think speech therapy is a very good thing!
