How can I teach my cat not to bite?

I've had several cats in the past but none so mischievous. I love him to bits- he plays with everyone, licks my hands, follows me around and even sleeps beside me when I'm not well. HOWEVER, he has this nefarious habit of biting real hard while playing! My hand is full of small scars and bruises thanks to that. I even tried hitting him back lightly, but it provoked him further, he probably thought I was playing with him... What should I do to teach him that he shouldn't bite?

Bethsmom's suggested was great. I was wondering if you got the biting under control or not. I had a biter on my hands thankfully she outgrew it. One thing to keep in mind is if he is still a baby and if you got him really young (8 weeks or so) it could be that he missed out on important socialization that teaches boundaries at play time. Kittens learn from litter mates and momma cat how to play when a kitten bites momma too hard momma lets him know. What I have done in the past is tell kitty No in a firm voice, but not a yell, then if it continues to bite too hard repeat no and stop playing walk out of the room when possible for a few minutes. Give him a little time to calm down and play again. I used to tell my kitty I'm not playing with you as I walked out and to this day she knows if I say it and calms down so she can continue playing. I wish you the best of luck. Michele
