Florida's Amendment 2

United States
October 14, 2008 9:36am CST
Has anybody heard about this yet? The amendment reads that : "In as much as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof should be valid or recognized." So besides the obvious repercussions for homosexual people, it also poses a great threat for those who may want to live together before they get married. I believe that such an amendment takes away some sort of freedom from us. Even if I am not entirely in support of various lifestyles, I still believe that people should be allowed their freedom, especially here in Florida where we're a lot more diverse and open-minded than other states who have already put bans on such. What are your views on this amendment? Would you vote yes or no on it during the election?

This is ridiculous. Florida seems to be really unwelcomeing of alot of gay rights. I just dont understand it. Its not so much that we "want to get married" its that we want to have the same legal rights of any heterosexual couple. This also rids the state of a common law marriage, where if a heterosexual couple lives together for a set amount of time they are viewed as married by common law.

Yes, I mean people should have the freedom to remain unmarried if they wish. This also may diminish the rights of children born out of wedlock, though I am not quite sure how the law about that works here...

I don't see what the big deal is. It doesn't say you can not do what you want to do, it only said the state will not see it as a legal union, I thought this was already law in the whole USA. I know it is in GA. It is mostly to protect rich guy for women that want to live with them awhile and leave and take half of what they have.

Yes but who is the government to make that kind of decision? I think it is wrong and this should be left to the individual..

I'd vote no for sure. I think it is an extraordinary thing that people that feed opression of some sort and came in search of freedom in America may be so quick to condemn people that organize their lives differently from themselves. I agree with everything you said. Opening up the possibility for more people to live in a loving and protecting union, under the law, does not take anything aeway from the traditional marriage. More love and comitment must be a good thing? Greatest of all is love - love can never be wrong.

Yes, I mean everyone has their right to live the way that they want to within certain boundaries of course. And Love is the greatest thing, if it's real then I believe that it definitely cannot be wrong. I really hope that enough people vote against this amendment to put it away for good.
