How does free web hosting earn?

I see some free web hosting web sites, which offer free service to the register... If they provide the web hosting with no payment,
how could they earn? Why they work for the sites without getting paid? Do they put any ad banners in the sites? But the users would pay attention to their own sites, might not be coming back to the host sites that frequently... How do you think?
