Should smoking at public places be tolerated?

Philippines

Hi fellow myLotters. I do not know if there are rules, statutes or laws in other places about this. But here in the Philippines, it is almost normal. But it really annoys me to see someone smoking in public places, specially in public utility buses where there are children or pregnant moms. They are very inconsiderate and selfish for me. I hate smoking but I don't intend to harass smokers. Its just that there is a proper place and proper time to do it putting at risk the health of others. It also annoys me when it says in the bus, 'NO SMOKING' but it is the bus driver doing it. The nerve... Thank you.

Hello, I am a religious smoker and feel that we are being discriminated against almost everywhere we go. We don't smoke on the buses any more but they are trying to herd us into small corners to have our sacred puff. The fines are pretty stiff if you get caught abusing the system although me and my friends always seem to get lucky. I do try and keep away from the mothers with babies as I can understand the health risk. They should somehow have some respect for the smoker as this is his habit and that is the way he likes it. I like to have my last blue puff in the quiet and peace of mind that I need. Crocket.

Philippines in particular, as far as i remember, never read or encountered a law prohibiting someone to smoke especially to public places. Public place per se would be presumed that it is a place where people have freedom to do what he/she wants. On the other hand, smokers in public places should be tolerated. The Government should not only regulate the use of it. In my own opinion, it is proper that there has to be a bill to be passed prohibiting smokers in public places. The purpose of said Bill is not only to conserve the environment and good health for secondary smokers, hence, to promote discipline and sensibility. More so, one must consider one's health, as well as the health of others. Healthy living, that is.

It should be banned as it endangers the lives of the people around the smoker. Second hand smoke is more hazardous than what the smoker inhales. So, it really should be banned.

I do not like smokers as you. I think it is so selfish form them. They talking about the right to do what they want to do but they usually do not care if they harm also non-smokers lungs this way. I think smoking should be ban at all public places such as pubs and restaurants. If they want to smoke, let them do it in their private places or just build up some smokers reservation where they can do it all the time:) I hope no smoker will feel offended, everybody can present own point of view here.

hi. thank you for responding. I agree with you that there should be a specific place where smokers my go if they feel like doing it. At least they are together in enjoying their hobby without annoying or risking someone's health. good day.

hi princess. i think there are several public places that do not allow smokers. i also hate smoking in public especially when i'm with my kid. because the number 1 victim of the smokers are the receiver or the second hand smoker. they have more chances of getting sick rather than the smokers itself. they are the ones who inhale the smoke. hope every public place will have no smoking area. take care

Smoking is injurious to health, and it should be banned from the public places specially like school, colleges, universities and hospitals. In my country smoking is banned already from all sorts of public places, even from restaurants and bars.

Hello Princess Thinker, How I wish that there will be a law or rules to follow for those who are smoking espesially in public. So for those who are non smokers like us will not get sick because of their bad habits and wrong doing. Hope that the public officials are concern enough and make a step to have a safe and a better place to live in. They should stop them from doing it in public to minimize if not to avoid from getting cancer. You are right that you can see people everywhere smoking and it's so frustrating that even minors are doing it too.

People in the Philippines will always have their addiction and are generally inconsiderate. They don't even consider their own bodies and souls much less the bodies and souls of others. When it comes to pampering their vices, Filipinos have no equal. Cheers!!

A strict implementation of law should be made, I think there is one but it is not being followed and there aren't any serious sanctions for it that is why people just basically ignore it. I get annoyed too, and their smoke makes me sick. People should limit their smoking to places where they won't be bothering anyone. And the government should do something about the restrictions.

Here in England within the last year the Government have implimented that a no smoking policy be maintained throughout pubs, clubs and social buildings throughout the country. I am not a smoker so to me it was a brilliant move and perhaps the only good thing this government has actually done since they have been in power. It's nice to be able to go out and not come home with my hair and clothes stinking of smoke. As far as I can see smokers here can only smoke outside, in their homes or in their car. It does make me laugh though. Some of the guys I work with would rather stand in pouring rain having a smoke instead of trying to give up.

I was in India and Here Smoking in public places is an offense. I do hate smokers. But there is no need to restrict smoking in all public places. Or they have to specify what does belongs to public place. Smoking in roads doesn't effect others more than that of vehicles pollution. But smoking in busses, hotels, parks and places like those should be banned with clear specification on the places. We have a ban in India and they haven't specified what does a public place is.
