Both operating systems are great. The only advantage of Windows XP is that more people are still using the products of windows. If you will be connecting to Windows-based networks I suggest you stick to Windows. But, hey, Linux has great stuff. you might want to try it.

There are different flavors of linux. I'm guessing that what you like to learn are the command lines. There are goods e-books about this topic.

I have used both Operating systems and your better bet is Windows XP it is more user friendly than Linux, with gnome though Linux can be just as user friendly. The most power in Linux comes from the text based commands that you type in at the command prompt. Using the Graphic interface it becomes another type of windows program.

i used both of them but i suggest you to use xp because it is so user friendly. in linux problems occurs rarely. so most of the companies use linux operating system as their servers.

It really depends. I've used both operating systems and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. What people say about Linux is wrong; it is a very user-friendly OS and has a strong community. And since it's all open-source, by the time there's a bug or security risk, someone's already fixed the problem and submitted it for download. There are some caveats, though. Use Linux if you want to squeeze all the power you can out of your PC and you're comfortable with that. Linux gives you complete control, which means you can either make your computer work really well or completely screw it up. But it is definitely user-friendly. If you need help there are always members of the community willing to give you a hand. Another caveat. Because Linux isn't as popular as Windows there isn't quite as much support for popular software and devices. So if you have software or certain devices that don't support Linux (some companies do have Linux drivers though), such as PhotoShop, then you'll need to stick to Windows. The main difference is that Microsoft doesn't give you complete control (which is fine) but also blames you when something goes wrong and asks you to restart every day (Linux only asks you to restart after it's modified important system components, which is only once every few weeks or so). Linux, on the other hand, does give you control, has a strong community, and can be as friendly, or friendlier, than Windows. So it's up to you. I'm stuck with Windows because I'm a gamer, but I would switch to Linux in a heartbeat if half of my games worked on it. If you only surf the web, check email, and edit documents, then Linux is probably the way to go. But if you use software or hardware that only works on Windows, then you might have to stick with Microsoft for a while.

Stick with windows XP. Linux has quite a learning curve, and is difficult for new people to install. Windows XP is more user friendly.
