you mentioned external DVD so i'm assuming this is thru USB.. when you insert the USB cable of the DVD combo, does your laptop respond to it? i mean, does the "removable hardware" icon (the green arrow thing) show on the system tray (icons near the clock at the lower left)? i'm guessing its either the laptop cannot find a proper driver for your DVD combo, or the USB cable contacts are dirty, or the DVD combo is plainly busted. i just hope it ain't the last guess.

yup, i have an external DVD dive, but the problem is not only the external, i dont even see the optical drive of my laptop, meaning i also lost my sight in both of my DVD drives. I contact Dell from this matter and they diagnostic test were done. The result is not that bad but it need me to buy an external hard drive because of my important files stuck on my hard drive. They restore my laptop to its original state and everything is fine again. Thanks to my warranty and it still exist on my stuff. Case is closed.
