Why are the eyes so important in a person's personality?

They say that the eye is the window to one's soul. So I guess, looking at one's eyes somehow shows us and gives us feelings if the person is saying the truth.

The eyes tell all when it comes to people. The "windows of the soul" say so much about a persons personality, sincerity, and so much more. You can tell whether they are lying or not by whether they can have direct eye contact or not. The sparkle and lustre says alot as well.

I think the eyes tell us whether the other person is paying attention to us.
I was watching the discovery channel, Daily Planet, yesterday and they were talking about face recognition. It appears, after much testing, that we actually check out to hot spots before we even get to looking at the eyes, and that only takes a couple of seconds.
The first spot that people look at when meeting anyone is just below the eye, at the top of the cheek, the second spot is the nose, then we finally get to the eyes.
I thought I always looked at the eyes first but I guess I was wrong.

we can say a lot with out eyes without using any other form of expression of body language. i don't really know why this is or even how we really do it but it's true!! I know that there is something special about my eyes, in fact i am an organ donor although i have stated that i do not want to donate my corneas, i don't know why, but there is just something about the eyes that makes people who they are, i don't like the idea of someone walking around with mine after i am gone, i know that sounds daft but it's obviously just one of my quirks! xxx
