I have been told to go to wikki so many times by friends it's not funny when I'm thinking about looking something up. LOL!! So I was wondering how many of you use wikkipedia and do you find it helpful? Have you ever found wikkipedia to be wrong in their information? If so what was it and were did you find the correct information?

Hi. I too use wikipedia a lot. Whenever we want some detailed information on anything, wikipedia is the first thing that crosses my mind. It is one of the most useful site on net. I have never found any information on wikipedia that was wrong. I guess they allow edits in there content only if the editor can provide proof of what they say which makes it very much consistent.

I occasionally use Wikipedia. I like to research things on the internet when I don't know something. Wikipedia is a good place to start, but doing research for school papers all the time has taught me that it's always a good idea to have another source to back up something you found on Wikipedia, especially a peer-reviewed source. I can't think of any instances where I found something wrong on Wikipedia. I tend to stay away from Wikipedia listings that don't have sources to back up the information, though. I have learned through obtaining my psychology degree that you have to have good sources to back up information. We are discouraged from using Wikipedia as a source for papers in school because it is not a reliable source. Sometimes I will go to Wikipedia if I am having trouble finding something so that I can learn a little more about what I am looking for and refine my search. Basically, I use it to help point me in the right direction. When it's for something like personal knowledge, Wiki is the fasted place to go to look things up.

Once the information about my country's prime minister was totally changed. It was a funny episode but I do really question wikipedia sometimes. © ronaldinu 2008

Well, I have a tendency to believe that not everything is right ... LOL!! So I usually get more than one place to search for information and then compare and see what doesn't line up then check it with a couple other sources if the first two don't match.

I don't look things up in wikki, but sometimes when I do internet searches I find myself there. Some of the information has been helpful, but sometimes I question the accuracy of the sources? I'm not sure why, I haven't really taken a time to find the answer to this, but I get the impression that the "articles" are often written by amateurs? I could be wrong, it's just the impression that I get.

Wikipedia is a community-build encyclopedia. That means that anyone can edit the information on any of the Wikipedia listings. Some people are experts on topics. Some are not. The thing to look for is sources listed by the authors. If a listing has no references that show where information was found, it can not be considered reliable. However, if a listing has several references that show where the author(s) found information, it is likely that the information is correct. However, personal bias can come into play in Wikipedia listings so that is another thing you have to be careful about.

I think that it might have to do with the fact that wikki can be edited .. I'm not sure how there editing process works but alot of people are saying that it can be edited by you or me or the guy next door. So I'm sure that there is information put in there for giggles sometimes which unfortunately disservice the site.

I use Wikipedia sometimes, but I would never use it as my only source. I never found wrong information in there, but it I know has happened before. There was a case where somebody wrote about a political party that they clearly didn't like, and the information was hateful and untrue. I never got to read it before it was deleted, but from I heard it was pretty heavy.

I have found in-accurate information on wikipedia. Friends I associate with have mentioned that they also have seen wrong information also, & even nicknamed it fakepedia. One that sticks in my mind is the history of the nunchaku (noon-chucks, as several I know prefer to spell it). It was originally used to separate rice grains from the plants. In southern China, farmer defending himself found out that it was quite an effective weapon. It happened to be what he had in his hand, & used it against a bandit, or gang of them. I believe that wikipedia mentioned that it was just legend.

I often go to Wikkipedia for background info especially for the articles I write, but I try to get info from other sources as well, just to make sure the info I'm looking for is accurate. The way I do it is just type in the subject I'm looking for and I'll usually get a lot of sources to go to.

Wikipedia it a great place to quickly search out information but it is data placed there by users and I do not know if any of it is verified to make sure it is accurate. I do not have my own encyclopedia so I do use it but I also check other web sites. If I am looking up word definitions then I use my dictionary. I bought the Oxford dictionary of historical principles when I first went to universtity and it gives the historical definition of a word which is wonderful for tracing a definition back to its originial meaning. I am very fond of it.

Wikkipedia is actually a really interesting site and so many things can be found out there. I only discovered it by accident a few months ago when I was looking at something and I was directed there. Now I always use it if I want to find something out, it is really helpful on a lot of things.

I also use Wikipedia as a sources of information about any topics that I want to know. Actually, I quite added it in my add on, so that I can easily access it whenever I have things that I want to know. Although, Wikipedia aren't that reliable, not 100% percent true to their info, every now and then, you may find some info that are wrong. Like when you read the book cover to cover, out of curiosity you want to learn more info about the book that you read, and you'll see some info that are incorrect and not mentioned to the book. Still, it was quite helpful site and really helps me a lot to get information.

I love wikipedia! I use that site all the time, it is very informational and it has helped me with so many school projects, though they tell us not to use it because it is editable. Some entries are false I will tell you that, but wikipedia has great moderators that change that information really fast. I have been guilty in editing some things and making the information wrong, it was as a joke, I made the spider monkey population triple in the past year haha, that did not stay wrong for very long though- I would have changed it back after sometime if it did not change, but I knew that was unlikely for it to go uncaught. Well anyways, I am off to work, happy mylotting and have a great night or day!

I use Wikipedia almost everyday. ; ) There so many articles that it keeps me reading. Usually, it's correct information and I trust it for research and info. Anyone can edit the article, so there might be some sections that try to mess you up, but that gets fixed by other people really quickly. I don't think I've ever had a problem with Wikipedia ever since I found it, which is a few years ago.

Lol, when I am searching for information I would never use Wikkipedia unless it was for something trivial. I have seen a lot of false information there as well as a lot of immature remarks. There are so many more reliable places to get factual information I wouldn't waist my time on a site that can be altered by anyone.

I think Wikipedia is an interesting site and sometimes I use it for general information. However, I would never use it for actual research. I have found inaccurate information in it. Various writers write in it and it is somewhat common for companies to hire their own writer to write on a certain subject - thus the writers can be a little bias - so to speak. However, I do find it helpful as a start to some research but I would warn against only using it as a source of information.

I find wikipedia to be the best site in providing accurate information. I personally trust on wikipedia a lot and i believe that they will never provide wrong article or information. Wikipedia gets its information from various sources which can be trusted and if that information is wrong then wikipedia would not be responsible for it. but really it is very helpful and in a day i usually go to wikipedia around 20 times.

I used wikipedia a lot if I need to get some information about something or someone real quick however, since the entries in wikipedia are done by volunteers, the accuracy of the information there could not be taken as 100% accurate as it is easy for some people to get some facts incorrect but went on posting it thinking that they have got the right thing. Normally, under these circumstances, I would try to cross reference the information that I got there with other documents wither it is online or offline. Books are good sources for more accurate information but then books are hard to bring around especially when you need lots of information quickly and that is the strength and specialty of wikipedia compared to others... In conclusion, it is okay to refer to articles posted on wikipedia but we must always try to check out some other documents that could verify the accuracy of those information posted on wikipedia. Cheers!

I frequently use wikkipedia for any kind of information. Every kind of information is there. It may have produce some wrong information. But still it is posses a lot of information and you can not ignore it. There are no other site which poses such a vast amount of information.
