My job makes me travel to countries in different parts of the world. If one can speak the language of the country, it certainly is very helpful for making friends and also for the business I travel for. I am learning Japanese and Thai languages since I get to the countries quite often. Have you also been learning foreign languages ? Which foreign languages can you speak ?

Traveling is my top hobby and I wish I could say that I had a gift for learning foreign languages. I only get on well learning languages that use the same alphabet as my mother tongue language. I learned French for five years when I was at secondary school, then I learned very basic German that is helpful for traveling. I studied in the Netherlands as part of my degree and tried to learn Dutch. The Dutch people are masters of foreign languages. I so wish I was like them. At the moment I am learning Spanish and my studies are going really well. If is half term so I will do some revision every day this week. I go to an evening class once a week and my teacher is from Venezuela. I admire your ability and effort to learn Japanese and Thai. Italian or Romanian are my kind of languages that I might like to learn in the future. I would never be able to master Arabic, Russian or Mandarin.

English is my foreign language. If I were to travel to some foreign land and consider living there for a while, I might want to learn their language so I can speak like a native.

No, I only speak English only. I am only fluent in this area of language. I have practiced speaking French in high school. I tool up a course of French as my elective.. I did learn how to say many words and some sentences. I also learned how to say my name in French too. I was happy to know how to do this..

I'm chinese, english is my only foreign languages.I want to speak english well and travel around the world,I think english is good enough, although other foreign languages are the same useful,Because people all around the world can speak english,no matter good or bad,you can communicate with them in english. If I learn another foreign language,it must be need much time, you might give up something. If you can not communicate with foreigners in english, you can use body language, painting, and others you can image, that is very interesting!

Yes, no doubt at all, English is spoken in just about all the countries around the world. Like you say, in some countries people may not speak well, but still quite comunicateable.

Well, I am from the USA, so my main language since I was born here is English. I have taken French in school, even though it's been over 25 yrs. ago, and can still speak a very little of it, and then I know some Spanish as well. Just not sure I know enough of either of these to be able to get a Job as an interperter or something like that though.

I spent 1 year in college learning Nipongo and learning how to read and write katakana and hiragana. I was really good at it but I never got to practice it and eventually have forgotten. I was planning to study in Japan at that time for a scholarship grant but it never materialized because of some age issues. It is really interesting to learn new languages. I found that I have the knack for it but I guess one just have to devote time and use it eventually for one to become really proficient.

Wow Japanese and Thai, now that's something! Congrats! As for me, living in Romania (I speak Romanian)at the border with Hungary and having since from the kindergarten Hungarian friends I learned Hungarian. From the TV, I learned Italian because they had much better programs in my childhood, and the Romanian language is the mixture between the Latin language and the Dacian language, during the Roman colonization. My grandmother is German so I learned German too. In the school I have learned ten years of French, and six of English, although with the aid of the PC it was a lot easier. So if I add them up, it comes to six but excluding Romanian there are five. I also want to learn Spanish because there are a lot of people who speak it, and because I like it how it sounds. Here is something I have figured out. If you already know one language that resembles to other languages that form a group by having the same root, it is a lot easier to learn the other ones. For example both English and German are germanic languages so if you know them it is easier to learn lets say Danish or Swedish or Norwegian because they are much alike. A Hungarian friend of mine once said something like this : How many languages do you speak, so many men are you. It sounds better in Hungarian :P Best regards, Octavian
