Would god really be that childish?

I do not believe in god but believe that it doesn't matter if you are religious or not - you should have the same moral values of being respectful to each other etc If it turns out god does exist in some form - and is so great and good would I not get credit for trying to be a good person?Would it be that good a god if he was spiteful enough to condemn people for not believing if that was their only 'sin'?
