How to solve USB problem???

I have got DELL INSPIRON 640m,I know it is a very old one, but i have been using it for 1 year. Now i got a confused problem that the USB is broken... if i insert any hardware but not disc, my computer is die....so if u know how to solve this cause, please tell me...
